Theory of Writing Essay

Having the skill and experience necessary to write a berth of papers while maintaining quality is very important. This has been the case during this semester of English. During this semester we had to analyze technical descriptions, lab reports and even conducted a group project. Throughout all of these different types of assignments, I have begun to develop a writing process to simplify the complexity of some of the work.  This process includes structuring what I write so that it is easy to read and come back to, as well as providing citations where need be. To further explain I have come up with a way to write my paper which involves answering the prompt in the order that it is asked. This way any potential readers will know that I answered the first question at the beginning of my writing etc. The relationship this has with my writing is that this is the standard format I now use to write all of my papers and is most likely what I’ll continue using. It also seems that having a solid organization in which I am easily able to transition between ideas further helps me provide strong evidence to my papers and makes them easier to read. All in all the experience I have gathered from doing a variety of assignments has led me to develop a flexible writing process.

My theory of writing when coming into this class was to write papers that had a lot of citations but little structure and explanation. This writing theory usually led my papers to be confusing and without a solid format to follow. My theory has evolved immensely after composing several papers as I now realize having a well-structured and precise paper is also needed alongside citations. For this reason, I now dedicate more sentences to explaining what I cited and also plan out the order of my paragraphs beforehand. Assignments such as the technical report and lab report were probably the most influential. Both of these assignments were similar in the way that they were non-fiction-scientific articles. When it comes to the genre of nonfiction it requires a lot of explanation especially if you’re writing a paper with the mind that the reader might not be familiar with the topic. Furthermore, what you write has to be easy to read and break apart in case the reader wishes to use the paper as source material. The relationship between my theory of writing and how I create knowledge is that the knowledge I create is supplemented and explained through my writing. If you create something you have to accurately explain how it works and what it does, for this reason developing a writing theory is important. My writing theory can be applied to many other different types of paper because it is the product of a variety of assignments. Furthermore, it is also incorporated with several course learning outcomes that enhance the efficiency of the writing process. These course learning outcomes mainly include developing strategies for reading and writing as well as practicing key rhetorical terms. It can also be used outside of class for writing correspondence and as a way to review others’ papers, as a template or process. Overall my writing theory which has been developed after completing a variety of assignments and utilizing course learning outcomes will help me both in and outside of class.

During the duration of this course, I developed my writing process through the completion of a variety of assignments as well as using the course learning outcomes. These assignments included a group project, analyzing a technical description and lab report as well as many other things. The course learning outcomes I utilized the most were recognizing and practicing key rhetorical terms, the practice of systematic application of citations, and last of all developing strategies for reading and writing when it comes to any assignment. In the end, these course learning outcomes helped me develop a writing strategy that is both organized and structured to be as simple and clear to read so that any audience is capable of understanding it. Furthermore, the writing process I created can be applied to many different papers and I have already used it for some. In conclusion the culmination of experience gained from writing papers and applying course learning outcomes lead me to develop a writing process that is more efficient than the one I used when I first started this class. This class has been very enjoyable and very beneficial to perfecting my wrong process, I am sure this information will help me in the future.
